This was a very enjoyable alternate history, in which Vlad Dracula (or Draculea, as it's spelled in the novel), cursed by the sultan with a need to drink blood, leads his people into battle against the forces of Islam, with surprising results. The writing was solid and the characterizations nicely done. Seeing Dracula as a hero instead of a villain is a nice touch. You feel for poor Vlad as he has to mix in listening to petitions from his subjects along with planning for battle. If you liked Saberhagen's Dracula series, you should really enjoy Impaler. There's a prequel to this novel, and one hopes for a sequel. There is violence in battle and involving the obligatory impalements; I'd put it between "some" and "graphic" violence. The use of children as sexual slaves by the sultan and his people is dealt with, but there is no explicit sex.Product details

Well written and enjoyable, "Impaler" was a refreshing change from the vampire legends surrounding the prince of Wallachia. The history included in the novel was both interesting and educational. Extraordinarily good reading for a self-published book.
for $3.99 you just stole a book... for its low price this is a GREAT book... my 2nd favorite overall. its not overly gory and NOT about vampires. you will learn why everybody makes a slightly incorrect judgement of vlad tepes. i would have paid $10.00 or more for this book...
All right, so I'm elbow-deep in researching my own work on medieval Transylvania, and I've been a Friend of Vlad since my friend the Wallachian Witch introduced us two decades ago. Put the prejudices upfront. I couldn't resist a story that promised a look at the real Vlad, rather than the Bram Stoker fantasy. What surprised me was just how real this one WAS. I was so convinced that it was simple historical fiction, that I was three-quarters of the way through before it dawned on me that Paulus had changed the ending! And that's all I'm going to say on that score . . .
Excellent combination of research and solid writing. Another reviewer suggested that Paulus was "channeling" Vlad, and I have to agree. She's certainly met the Vlad that I know, in all his ruthless but genuine charm, intelligence, and good humor. I was very pleased that she gave his second wife some of the credit she deserves for mellowing his youthful anger. While I sincerely quibble with her frank treatment of sexual abuse among the Turks -- such things are not discussed openly to this day in Orthodox Romania, and certainly would not have been in the fifteenth century -- it helps to make the character's motivations clear to modern readers who are more accustomed to openness.
A truly stunning piece of work, and well worth the modest price.
I enjoyed this fantastic tale in a historic setting. I do not know enough about the history to know how closely the non-fantasy elements follow real history but this makes for a bizarre but entertaining tail from a bloody and morbid time.
This was an intriguing version of Vlad's life, focusing on his last reign as opposed to his second. It also incorperates the vampire legend, without being too fantastic or mythical. It is considered "alternate history" so it doesn't end in the manner most Vlad books do. If your looking for a good story, this is it, I couldn't put it down! If you are looking for historical accuracy, or if historical innacuracies bother you, pass this one up.
This book is such a refreshing take on Vlad Draculea, a far cry from the Victorian vampire tropes and cliches that have been done to death. This book gets nearer the heart of the actual man himself than anything else I have read. I highly recommend it to readers of historical fiction as well as readers of fantasy.
Paulk has written a fine novel in Impaler. The reader will find himself engaged and eager to turn the next page.
As other reviewers have noted, the story centers around Vlad Draculea and his attempts to protect his land and deliver vengeance to those who have wronged him. The plot is well-constructed, and readers will likely find themselves empathizing with Draculea and everything he has endured and all he must overcome. Great battle scenes, too.
By way of criticism, Draculea explains himself too often. In the middle of dialogue it sometimes seems that Vlad is explaining everything he says to the reader. Some of that is all right, but I found it excessive in this book. A map of the territory would have been helpful, too.
Paulk is a talented writer who's written a very good book in Impaler.
